To make a map of sustainable practices and methods already being used by the local population.
To call the parents of the children to the school and demonstrate the use of permaculture principles
To develop a strategy for natural resorces management, soil and water management.
To organize meetings to develop a design for the local community and to create clear goals and objectives.
To create a plan with the local populations that then can be presented to aid funders and people that can give assistance.
To identify local examples of success, so that the community can use their local examples as their models for implementing.
To develop sustainable models that can be replicated and scaled up, models that local people can understand and beleive in because they are observable and in wich the population can make their own decisions.
To look for good practices for soil and water conservation, terraces swales, gardens, springs higiene and maintenance.
To support the creation of water management commitees.
To connect with the parents of the children and listen to their needs.
To support the creation of local independent leaders and teachers.
To give prizes to local people using good practices and ecourage them to share the knowledge so that others can copy.
We will be in La Gonave Island to support a community there with their food and water supply. It is a very poor island, a survey in 2002 found household water supply was below 10lt/person/day. The main economic activity has been charcoal for sale in the suburban precincts of Port au Prince the capital. This has meant much of the islands trees and have been cleared, the islands soil is being washed away and the ground water not getting it's recharge. The work will include planting vetevier grass on contours and supporting one of the islands communities to draft a permaculture design for their community. "
This is the present situation in Haiti
We will be working in the island of La Gonave
